What is the most pressing issue facing the office you are running for and what do you plan to do to solve it?
As a candidate committed to enhancing our community, one of the most pressing issues facing Carlisle is the need for affordable and accessible housing, alongside a commitment to the Climate Action Plan and encouraging sustainable development. Yes, technically these are all individual issues, but these issues in particular are so interconnected, progress to one is progress to all. I plan to address these challenges through the following initiatives:
Public Works: Prioritize infrastructure upgrades, focusing on pedestrian and bicycle-friendly improvements. This includes fostering sidewalk maintenance, abiding by our current updating and maintenance program, expanding bicycle infrastructure, and promoting active transportation to reduce reliance on motor vehicles.
Land Use Reform: Implement small area plans and secure Municipal Assistance Program (MAP) grants, where possible. I will advocate for updating zoning regulations to allow Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and inclusionary zoning policies, which can provide affordable housing options, promote aging in place, and invigorate the local economy.
Collaboration: It is crucial to engage in active collaboration with local stakeholders. By partnering with local organizations, residents, and businesses, we can better understand their unique needs and concerns, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable environment for all.
Please outline two examples of how you are improving your community.
My commitment to enhancing the Carlisle community is focused largely on community service.
As a member of Project SHARE’s FARE for SHARE committee, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those experiencing food insecurity and helped plan the food truck event/silent auction to help fund the organization and assist with the community.
In addition to my work with Project SHARE, I have recently become involved in the Carlisle Planning Commission, where I assist in making recommendations on development and planning initiatives.
Moreover, my involvement in the Carlisle Area Democratic Committee has provided opportunities to support and amplify the efforts of Democratic candidates and organize community events. Legislation and public policy are one of the many ways we can work to protect and advocate for marginalized communities, promoting engagement, dialogue, and support for our democracy. Assisting with these events has allowed me to help do so.
What would you do in office to benefit and help young people?
As a young person myself, I recognize the importance of diverse representation and the need to address the unique concerns of youth in our community. That said, I am also aware that young voters are not a monolith and that young people have unique and complex needs and perspectives.
In office, I will strive to create a better future for young people by focusing on key issues that significantly impact their lives. One critical concern for young people is climate change, which will significantly shape their future and is an area where they bear the brunt of decisions made long before them. By prioritizing sustainable development, green initiatives, and collaboration with local organizations, we can help mitigate some of this harm. Another essential aspect of supporting young people is through community development. How are youth expected to do anything if they cannot afford to even survive: by investing in education, job opportunities, affordable housing, and accessible public spaces, we can at least move the needle forward.
What is an issue that you are passionate about and why?
One issue that I am particularly passionate about is closing the generational wealth gap, particularly among minority groups. This issue is deeply connected to other policies I support, as closing the wealth gap requires comprehensive solutions that include improving access to affordable housing, accessible resources, and a connected community. My passion for addressing social justice issues stems from my personal experiences growing up in poverty with a single mother. My firsthand knowledge of the systemic barriers has fueled my determination to advocate for change to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to thrive.
What is the last book you read or what is your favorite book?
Love this question and come check out my book collection any day! My favorite book of all time is “This Side of Paradise” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It resonates deeply with my appreciation for literature and the written word. The book also offers an interesting exploration on social class differences and is a masterwork in prose and the idea of life changing around you. The last book I read was “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,” which delves into themes of queer longing and storytelling. It is the type of book that leaves you gut-wrenched and heartbroken, and feeling also just a little bit seen and not alone.
Is there anything else that you would like the Young Democrats to know about you or your campaign?
In my spare time, I am singlehandedly trying to bring back the word groovy
