County: Adams
Office: School Director, Gettysburg Area School District
Incumbent: No
Vote For: 4

What is the most pressing issue facing the office you are running for and what do you plan to do to solve it?

The most pressing issue is the Department of Education’s threat to withhold Title 1 funding, which funds reading teachers in our K-5 buildings, at the expense of valuable DEI initiatives.

Please outline two examples of how you are improving your community.

  1. I am a trustee for the Adams County Library System. 2. I am a member of the Pathways to Racial Justice organization.

What would you do in office to benefit and help young people?

Public education is the cornerstone of a healthy community. I can’t imagine a world in which public education is not fully supported. When our students, Gettysburg area’s collective children, have access to academic, arts, social, and athletic opportunities, they thrive. As a School Director, I would focus energy on providing and protecting these opportunities.

What is an issue that you are passionate about and why?

I am passionate about protecting our public schools as they face unprecedented threats to programming and funding from the Department of Education.

What is the last book you read or what is your favorite book?

A Key into the Language of America by Roger Williams, the Tomaquag Museum edition

Is there anything else that you would like the Young Democrats to know about you or your campaign?

I served as a school director from 2017 – 2021. My interest in returning to the school board comes at a time when public schools face unprecedented challenges as they adapt to fast-moving public education reform at the U.S. Department of Education. I feel compelled to try, once again, to be a strong voice for “good” on our school board. I have experience guiding the district through uncharted territory, having served during the pandemic years. I believe my expertise as a business professional and in higher education, as faculty and faculty leader, make me uniquely qualified to be part of the solution with a focus on maintaining opportunities for students and supporting our teachers. The ability to not simply react to change but actively forecast and manage change is critical when making multi-pronged and complicated decisions. I have the skillset to do that. I have extensive experience working in teams, building strategies, managing budgets, and importantly, I understand the importance of keeping our students at the center of every decision we make. I know the role of a school director, from experience. I am PSBA trained and have attended a Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools (PARSS) conference. I will be effective on day one.
