What is the most pressing issue facing the office you are running for and what do you plan to do to solve it?
The financial health of the District is troubling. They are facing multi-year deficits. I have ideas to bring new revenue into the District through grants and private-public partnerships that would help better prepare our students for the type of economy that we have. We no longer are a job force that relies solely on college, so we need to better prepare our students to enter the workforce.
Please outline two examples of how you are improving your community.
I am improving our community by the job that I do for a nonprofit. I also volunteer for Junior Achievement within the school district.
What would you do in office to benefit and help young people?
I would ensure that we are preparing young people be better prepared for the workforce. I have ideas for the curriculum that would allow students to have a more focused education 9-12 to achieve their career goals. I also want to make sure that we continue to provide access to books and materials that are age-appropriate, but have in recent years been deemed inappropriate because some parents don’t like the topics discussed. I don’t think books should be banned based on your personal preferences. Librarians do a wonderful job of have a variety of age appropriate materials within the school and that’s what should happen. Our library should allow students to open their mind to different viewpoints.
What is an issue that you are passionate about and why?
I am passionate about inclusivity and career readiness. Inclusivity is beneficial to everyone. Once one group of people are excluded it’s a slippery slope before more groups are discriminated against. I want to ensure that all students feel safe and supported within the District. I also am very passionate about career readiness because saw first hand that college isn’t for everyone. My husband tried on and off for 7 years and finally realized it wasn’t for him. He was able to work with a company who provided hands on training and he has been with the company for 18 years and is an executive. College isn’t for everyone and now more than ever we should embrace that mentality.
What is the last book you read or what is your favorite book?
I a voracious reader, I read at least a book a week, sometimes more depending on how long they are. The last book I read was called Always You and Me.
Is there anything else that you would like the Young Democrats to know about you or your campaign?
I am working with the Hampden Democrats, but I do a lot of the work myself. Everything I say and write comes from me, not an advisor or anything and I’m proud of that. I want to be authentic and transparent, and I believe that comes across in my various campaign platforms that I use to reach out publicly.
