County: Adams
Office: School Director - Gettysburg Area School District
Incumbent: No
Vote For: 4

What is the most pressing issue facing the office you are running for and what do you plan to do to solve it?

I view the current lack of transparency and ineffective communication between the school board and the community as detrimental to the overall success of GASD.

I will work toward creating an open line of communication between fellow board members, school staff, the community and myself. That may take the form of small group meetings, visiting individual schools or simply making myself available to listen to stakeholders to involve them in the decision making process.

Please outline two examples of how you are improving your community.

I recently joined a group called Pathways to Racial Justice which has as one of its goals attracting teachers of color to the Gettysburg Area School District.

As a retired history teacher, I actively support local historical preservation societies, including Adams County Historical Society, Friends of Gettysburg Foundation and Historic Gettysburg Adams County Preservation Society.

What would you do in office to benefit and help young people?

I will be an advocate for young people, a voice, a supporter, someone whom they will be comfortable speaking with because I will LISTEN to them. I feel strongly that the School Board should include a student representative and students’ needs must be front and center in every decision.

What is an issue that you are passionate about and why?

An issue I am passionate about is ensuring that students are seen and heard and that their viewpoints are considered. The primary mission of the School Board should be to guarantee a safe, inviting and stimulating environment in which students can develop the skills necessary to overcome whatever challenges they face in life.

What is the last book you read or what is your favorite book?

The last book I read was Thaddeus Stevens: Nineteenth-Century Egalitarian
