What is the most pressing issue facing the office you are running for and what do you plan to do to solve it?
It is very difficult to pick only one issue. In order to thrive, Harrisburg must have safe streets, strong schools, stable finances and business opportunities. All of these are important. As a financial professional I am confident in my ability to address stable finances as every decision revolves having money available. One of my first projects will be developing and installing a system of city-wide surveillance cameras to fight crime. It is also crucial that downtown Harrisburg be rejuvenated as a hub for the entire Central PA region.
Please outline two examples of how you are improving your community.
As a gay activist I organized the initial Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival of Central PA. I also started what is now the LGBT Chamber of Commerce. I have many accomplishments as an elected official fighting for the residents of Harrisburg. Outside of government I founded and grew a successful business in downtown Harrisburg – MillerDixonDrake CPAs. On a personal note I own and manage a free community garden in uptown Harrisburg that currently has 16 happy gardeners participating.
What would you do in office to benefit and help young people?
If I can secure the funding I would like to have a summer program to employ youth willing to work throughout the city. I would also encourage city internships for qualified youth to gain work experience. I will work and promote organizations like the Y that offer after school programs to keep students involved in positive activities to enhance personal growth.
What is an issue that you are passionate about and why?
I love city living because everything is close and a car is not necessary. I walked or rode my bike to work for 30 years. I also have an electric scooter. Walking etc to all of the needs of daily life is a super lifestyle. I am committed to making Harrisburg even more friendly to walking, biking, pedestrian only spaces and entertainment that is within easy reach of every resident.
What is the last book you read or what is your favorite book?
Favorite book My Antonia by Willa Cather. . It just so happens that I am currently reading another book by her, The Professor’s house.
Is there anything else that you would like the Young Democrats to know about you or your campaign?
I am by far the most qualified person for mayor in this race. Please compare my website, FriendofDanMiller.com with any other candidate. I have very limited social media experience but this week I posted my first reel on Instagram @DanMillerforMayor.
